Description
A painterly application to this photo accentuates the detail in the foreground buildings and the receding of the buildings in the background into the gloom. We waited and waited for good weather in Budapest to climb Gellert Hill for views of the city, the Danube River, and the bridges. But on this winter holiday, this was as good as it got! Still, there is no denying that the climb up is worth the view. The view is ever-changing on the way up, and (if you go down the opposite side of the hill from which you climbed up) also on the way down. The climb is not hard, especially if you are stopping to enjoy the view and take photos every few steps! This view shows St Stephen's Basilica towering over its neighbors on the Pest side of the Danube River. This is the most important church building in Hungary, one of the most significant tourist attractions and the third highest building in Hungary. Equal with the Hungarian Parliament Building in height, it is one of the two tallest buildings in Budapest at 96 metres (315 ft), symbolizing that worldly and spiritual thinking have the same importance. The height is also significant in that it commemorates the establishment of the Principality of Hungary in 896. According to current regulations there cannot be buildings taller than 96 meters in Budapest, as shown quite graphically here! .
